Chapter Thirteen: Who is Elssyia?

They drifted in the water, together, after, basking in the nirvana of that final climax. They held hands as they floated.

Emily was still in her. She felt Elssyia’s fingers against hers, she experienced her own touch through Elssyia’s skin. “Who are you?” Emily asked. “Or do you still not know me enough to trust me yet?”

“I barely know you at all,” Elssyia replied.

“That’s not true. I’ve seen into you. I’ve seen memories, I’ve shared in your thoughts.”

“And what did you discover?”

“I saw your parents, your family, some sort of community in a forest.”

“Did you see what happened?” Elssyia whispered.

Emily’s chest tightened at that, at the fear she’d tasted, at her own memories that vision had stirred. “Yes. Was it them? Was it the Order of Loghaine?”

“Different people, different details, but much the same.”

Emily was almost too scared to ask the next question. “Did they kill your parents?”

“No. They escaped. We escaped. We got away, but a lot of people didn’t. Most were butchered.”

“Why?” But Emily thought on what she’s seen. “Because you were elves?”

“Partly.”

“I was told the elves were all gone.”

“No. We persist. But in hidden places. Because of the men who attacked us, and ones like them.”

“They want to kill you?”

“All of us.”

“Why?”

“The same reasons as always, throughout the entirety of history. Because we’re different. Because we worship other gods. And because of magic.”

Emily let her feet sink to the warm tiles at the bottom of the bath. She stood in the water. Elssyia stood with her. She faced Emily.

“They fear magic?” Emily asked.

“Those who can’t wield it see magic as a threat to their power. What did Lady Morrigan tell you about the order of knights who attacked your troupe?”

“You know about that?” Emily couldn’t remember ever telling Elssyia. Perhaps Emily had shown it to her?

“I do. Rumours are rife, beneath the surface of Castle Sarpadelle. And I saw it, in your mind, this time and the last. Those memories are shallow in you, but that’s no surprise. I’m sorry for what happened, to you and your friends. To your real family.”

A sudden lump was in Emily’s throat. She blinked back tears before they formed. Emily took a while to steady herself before she spoke. “She told me they’re a militant arm of the Church of Him. That they’re magic hunters. That’s why they attacked us.”

“But who were they after?” Elssyia whispered.

Emily had dwelled on that question, often, since her rescue. “I don’t know.”

“You?”

Emily shook her head. “They can’t have been. I didn’t know I had any affinity with magic then. I didn’t even know magic was real. It must have been someone else they were after.” Emily looked back up into Elssyia’s face. “Who? Do you know?”

“I don’t. But you should ask that of Lady Morrigan. I think you have to.”

Emily went dizzy, she was overcome with a sudden sensation like vertigo, as if she was standing on the edge of a precipice. Her mind spun as it teemed with questions. She tried to focus on one of them to centre herself.
